The Grateful Bread Bakery is a small, family run artisan bakery in the heart of Hexham, Northumberland, specialising in organic sourdough bread. We also sell some of the good stuff that goes with bread, like Ampersand Dairy cultured butter and bags of freshly roasted coffee by Ouseburn Coffee Co.

Christmas Eve Opening Hours

Please note due to the increase in output for Christmas Eve, we will be opening at the later time of 9am. We ask anybody with a pre-order to collect before 12pm as usual to allow the team to get away for Christmas.

A huge thank you to everyone who has been ordering bread through our ‘Click & Collect’ service twice a week at the bakery. It’s been great to be baking during this period of uncertainty and we’ve loved seeing so many of you come back time and time again.


As you know, we are a small, open plan bakery, and with that in mind we will be operating with a one in, one out policy. Please queue according to current social distancing guidelines and be respectful of our neighbours, as the Market Street community as a whole is opening back up. Please note we will now only be taking card payments. 

We are going to keep a small percentage of bread available to pre-order on the website. This will be for collection on Wednesdays and Saturdays only , and we would like this to be reserved for those a little further out of Hexham, or those whose circumstances mean they can’t easily pop to the shop for their bread first thing in the morning. Please note that there will be less bread available to click and collect now we are opening up so please shop with consideration avoid 'stockpiling'. If you do want to make a large bread order, please email and talk to Alan directly. Pre-orders to be collected before 12pm.

There will also be some changes to the breads available every day. One or two omissions and one or two new breads, but we will talk about that more later.
